Mt Rwenzori Hike Safari for 10 Days

Overview

Rwenzori is the highest mountain in Uganda, with the highest peak sitting at 5,109m above sea level. This is the third highest peak on the Africa continent and it is snow caped, meaning one has to prepare for the below zero-degree weather if they are to hike Rwenzori mountain. Hiking pace is always based on the slowest person in the group and therefore, if you have a slow pace, it shouldn’t stop you from taking on the Rwenzori mountain ranges.

Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Arrival.

Arrive Entebbe airport to meet our company representative who will transfer you to your hotel. Relax at the hotel as you prepare to transfer to the base the following Day.

Day 2: Drive from Kampala to the base of Rwenzori Mountains.

Our driver guide will pick you up from your hotel in Kampala to transfer you to Kasese, the base of the Rwenzori mountains. Overnight at Hotel Magherita. OR Trekkers Hostel.

Day 3: Trekkers to Sine Hut. 1,450m – 2,596m.

Today, after clearing with the park warden, we start our hike at trekkers which is 1,450 metres above sea level, to Hike to Sine Hut that sits at 2,596 meters.
The walk takes you up the valley floor, through tall Afro Montane forest Trees. The steady climb offers, you an opportunity to spot multitudes of birds and a chance to see blue monkeys and sometimes you might spot black and white colobus monkeys. As you spot the emblem of the Bakonzo people, the black and white colobus monkeys that are protected by the King / Omusinga, there are plenty of plant species that you should not miss out on . These include bamboo thickets, low shrubs , fungi and plenty of flowers.
200m to Sine hut, you will spot the magnificent Enock Falls for a screen saver opportunity. You will reach Sine hut and relax as you enjoy the view and beauty from the wooden huts, that are set between tall forest trees.

Day 4: Sine Hut 2,596m to Kalalama Camp 3,147m, then to Mutinda Camp. 3,585

Depart sine hut at 8:30am, to climb a steep hill almost entering the Bamboo- Mimulopsis zone immediately. This zone is muddy and slippery during the rainy season, and therefore the trek is slow, although this rewards you with beautiful sceneries as you climb through an altitude of 551m and a distance of 1.8km and retire at Kalalama camp. Take a rest here and have a cup of coffee or tea before proceeding to Mutinda Camp. On the way to Mutinda camp, you will cross several streams and pass close to a moss covered water falls, as you meander up and down, across several small knolls.
As you proceed on your climb to the camp, watch out for a beautiful mossy river, that tumbles down over rocks under giant heather trees. Whose trunks are cover with Usnea lichen also referred to as old man beards to reach Mutinda.
If you have energy, you can opt to hike for one to two hours to Mutinda look out that offers splendid views of the Rwenzori Mountains. Which is 3,925 m, above sea level.
Overnight at Mutinda Camp at 3.582 metres

Day 5: Mutinda Camp to Bugata Camp (4,100m)

Go through a boggy trail on your way to Bugata, especially during the wet season. This will take you to cross the Mutinda valley a home to tussock grass and plenty of flowers that are interspersed with many Giant Lobelias. Climb a steep section up to Namusinga valley. (,3840m) which offers excellent views of sheer waters falls, and on looking back you will spot the Mutinda peaks. Through the wide Namusinga valley, you will find your way to Bugata Camp.

Overnight at Bugata Camp.

Day 6: Bugata camp to Hunwick Camp.

Depart Bugata camp and through Namwanjarra Pass you will head to Hunwick’s camp. The trail will take you through the valley and the green vegetation of moss and giant lobelias. This is the best place to spot the Malachite sunbird for bird lovers. Climb up a ridge to hunwick camp that is located at the top of the deep valley, offering excellent views of Mt Stanely, Bake and Weismann’s peak. Overnight at Hunwick’s camp.

Day 7: Hunwick’s Camp to Margherita Camp. 4,485m

Trek to Magherita Camp, which is located between huge rocks to shield us from the strong winds. The Walk to the camp, will take you to pass and cross the valley to pass by Lake Kitandara which is beautiful with deep waters and surrounding vegetation. Proceed through Scott Elliott’s pass and then up the ridge to Magherita camp. This camp is where the Duke of Abruzzi camp whilst hiking to Magherita peak in 1906.

Day 8: Climb Mt Stanely to Magherita Peak – Head to Hunwick’s Camp.

The trek starts as early as 2am in order to beat the heavy clouds and snow storms. Due to changing weather we try to start early and by 10am, should be turning back around. For those without hiking experience we recommend you stop at the Stanley glacier and climb up to a good vantage point on a rocky outcrop on the southern edge of Alexandra Peak to enjoy fantastic views over Congo and the lower mountain ridges. After ascending the peak at 5,109 metres you then pass directly down to Hunwick’s Camp at 3.874 metres.

Day 9: Hunwick Camp to Kiharo Camp. 11km

Climb a ridge towards McConnell’s prong to have a screen saver view of the three peaks and Scott’s Elliott’s pass before reaching Olivers Pass which sits at 4,505m above sea level. You will then trek to cut across below Weismann’s park to Nyamwamba river that flows to Kilembe and Kasese pouring into Lake George of Queen Elizabeth National park. .
Once you are done crossing the confluence the trail meanders down the valley to Kiharo Camp. Kiharo camp is located deep in a valley with dense vegetation and high cliffs. On the way to the valley, you will climb after a ridge and you will find a pile of stones, that seems misplaced, however these were brought down by the glaciers, which later melted.

Day 10: Kiharo Camp to Trekkers Hostel.

This trail starts off with a walk down Nyamwamba valley, with beautiful views and moss covered rocks. You will walk to the Parks’ gates which are 16 kms, away and then add another 2km to Trekkers Hostel. This last leg of the hike takes about 6 to 8 hours. Overnight at Trekkers hostel or Hotel Magherita.
